That Thing You Do!

Plot

That Thing You Do! is a 1996 American musical comedy-drama film written and directed by Tom Hanks. The movie tells the story of a one-hit wonder band called The Winkles, who rose to fame in 1964 with their catchy tune "That Thing You Do!". The film follows the journey of the band's lead singer and songwriter, Guy Patterson (played by Adam Schatz), and his friends Jimmy Mattingly (Johnathon Schaech) and Chad Gates (Ethan Embry). The trio forms The Winkles in Erie, Pennsylvania, and soon after, they're discovered by a local DJ who helps them get a recording contract. As the band's popularity grows, they're whisked away to New York City to perform on popular television shows and tour across the country. Along the way, they meet their new manager, Mr. White (Bill Cobbs), who becomes obsessed with turning them into teen idols. As The Winkles' fame reaches its peak, internal conflicts begin to emerge. Guy struggles with the pressures of fame, while Jimmy's ego grows exponentially. Chad, meanwhile, starts to question whether he wants to be a part of this whirlwind celebrity life. Through it all, the band must navigate the cutthroat music industry and confront their own personal demons. Will they be able to stay true to themselves or get swept away by the star-making machinery? That Thing You Do! is a nostalgic ode to the early days of rock 'n' roll, with a dash of satire and wit. The film features a range of catchy original songs, as well as cameos from real-life musical legends like Tom Hanks himself, Liv Tyler, and Charlize Theron. With its charming performances, witty dialogue, and infectious soundtrack, That Thing You Do! is a must-see for music lovers and fans of '60s pop culture.
